Area of Interest – Public and Human Services | Kirtland Community CollegeOne of the biggest questions future beauty professionals have is simple:

“Will I actually be ready to work when I graduate?”

For many in the industry, the honest answer has traditionally been… not quite yet.

After completing beauty school and earning a license, many graduates still enter a salon and spend months — sometimes longer — in an associate or assistant program before they’re ready to take clients and start making money.

At The Salon Professional Academy, we saw that gap — and decided to do something about it.

Why We Built the Externship Program

We created our externship program with one clear goal:

👉 to shorten the time between graduation and earning income.

Instead of students finishing school and then starting real salon training, our students begin that process while they’re still enrolled.

They don’t just learn theory and practice in the classroom. They also step into real salon environments, working alongside experienced professionals, understanding salon culture, and further developing the skills that make them salon ready!

The result?

Students graduate having done two things at once:

  • Completed their required hours and education
  • Gained real-world salon experience that prepares them for immediate success

What the Externship Experience Actually Looks Like Stylist providing hair coloring training in hairdressing salon

This isn’t a passive experience — and it’s not just shadowing.

Students in the externship program are placed in carefully selected salon environments where they actively participate in the day-to-day flow of the business.

They might:

  • Assist stylists during real client appointments
  • Help apply color and support technical services
  • Perform blowouts and finishing work
  • Observe and participate in consultations
  • Take part in salon-led training and classes

At the same time, students follow a structured training plan that focuses on developing both technical and professional skills — from service execution to guest communication to retail and salon operations.

They’re not treated like extra hands.

They’re treated like future professionals.

Learning the Culture — Not Just the Skills

One of the biggest advantages of the externship program is exposure to real salon culture.

Students don’t just learn how to do services — they learn:

  • How a salon team works together
  • How to interact with guests in a professional setting
  • How to manage time, expectations, and energy
  • What it actually feels like to be in a fast-paced salon environment

These are things that can’t fully be taught in a classroom — but they make all the difference when starting a career.

A Head Start on the Associate Program

In many salons, new graduates are required to complete an associate or assistant program before taking clients independently.

Our externship program is designed to mirror that experience — before graduation.

Students are essentially completing a version of that training while still in school, which means when they graduate, they’re not starting from zero.

They’re stepping in with experience, confidence, and a clear understanding of what’s expected of them.

Real Opportunities After Graduation

One of the most exciting outcomes of the externship program is what happens next.

Students build relationships with salons while they’re still in school. They prove their work ethic, develop their skills, and become part of the team.

And in many cases?

The salons want them to stay.

For students who find the right fit, externship can naturally lead to employment — making the transition from student to professional smoother and faster.

Hands-On Experience is Crucial for Beauty ProfessionalsWhat Makes This Program Different

Not all externships are created equal.

At TSPA DC, we are intentional about the salons we partner with. We don’t just place students anywhere — we work with salons that are committed to mentoring, educating, and investing in the student’s growth.

Our partner salons:

  • Actively train and develop students
  • Provide hands-on learning opportunities
  • Support long-term career growth — not just short-term help

We also maintain close communication with our salon partners, ensuring students are supported both in the salon and back at the academy.

This is a true partnership — focused on the student’s success.

The Bottom Line

The beauty industry is full of opportunity — but the transition from school to career can sometimes feel like a gap.

The externship program helps close that gap.

It gives students the chance to build real experience, develop confidence, and step into their careers with momentum instead of hesitation.

Because at the end of the day, it’s not just about graduating.

It’s about being ready.
